hayato gokudera
Fandom: Katekyo Hitman REBORN!
Personality: Gokudera presents himself fairly straight forwardly to most people. The world at large witnesses a rebellious personality and an aversion to authority, snappish and temperamental, often anti-social. He shouts and stomps around and generally makes a nuisance of himself, attempting to portray himself as a cool punk. He wears flashy, fashionable clothes in a style reminiscent of Harajuku street fashion: tight pants with crazy straps and belts, graphic tees and lots of layers, chunky bracelets and necklaces and rings. His smoking habit is both for appearances sake and the habitual trap of addictive, obsessive personality types. He's violent and doesn't hesitate to use force to get his opinions across, often punching first and asking questions later. He doesn't have patience for idealism or optimism, preferring to look as angry as possible, like the whole world is against him. His attitude is wider than his ego, and it surrounds him much like the perpetual cloud of smoke from his cigarettes.

Most of this is a carefully constructed veneer crafted as self defense. Gokudera's world has already been destroyed: first by the "murder" of his mother, and second by his father's disapproval and unwillingness to recognize him as a legitimate son (at least in Gokudera's eyes, since he was paraded around as being the son of his father's legal wife). Society has already given him the middle finger, so his attitude is simply a giant Fuck You right back in its face. Gokudera had given up on living a good and proper life at a young age, and his devotion to Tsuna is more than simply caring for a friend and leader. Tsuna gave his life reason again; Tsuna is why Gokudera can make something of himself, instead of falling into delinquent obscurity and spiraling towards rock bottom. His near obsession with being the perfect Right Hand Man stems more from his desire to be needed and validated than from any actual want to protect Tsuna as a person (although over the comic Tsuna certainly becomes one of his closest friends, and Gokudera's relationship, and therefore his own self worth, certainly changes). Having someone who needs him, who approves of him, is just as fulfilling as actually accomplishing something.

He's smart, bordering on brilliant and genius, actually; his intelligence level is far beyond his age. He seems to easily do well in school despite his appearance (which startled Tsuna), and he even goes so far as to explain simple things (like swimming) using complex mathematical equations. He appears to enjoy learning, and creating things from his research is something he devotes his life to (the development of the Sistema C.A.I. is certainly a focal point of his character development during the years between the early days of the Vongola and ten years in the future). He's analytical and a surprisingly good tactician when his anger doesn't cloud his vision, which is something that happens all too often, either from the brashness of his youth or his burning desire to prove himself. He tends to invest too much of himself into everything he does, which leads to him becoming over emotional and borderline hysterical when he begins to fail. His frustration easily gets the best of him, and he seems to be his own worst enemy--his unwillingness to rely on others and his own emotional responses seem to be the primary reasons he continuously loses his fights during the comic.

Sadly, Gokudera is defined more by his insecurities than anything else. Despite his brilliance, despite his loyalty and devotion and drive and ambition, its the self loathing and need to prove himself that make Gokudera who he is.

Gokudera is not a leader. He may be brilliant, and he may be brave, but he does much better following orders than anything else. His ambition lasts as far as proving his worth, mainly to his family, his mentor, Tsuna, and himself (quite frankly, he doesn't give a damn what the majority of the world thinks about him). He doesn't create for himself though, or to better his status: he creates to help the Vongola, to help Tsuna, to push Tsuna towards recognition and status. He's intelligent, creative, analytical; he enjoys learning and researching and using his knowledge for the people he cares about. He's borderline intolerant of stupidity; he needs to correct people when they're wrong, and doesn't care whether you're a little kid or a head of state. If you're wrong, he will tell you. That said, if you're talented and interesting and smart, he'll admire you and respect you indefinitely. He also seems to waver between being realistic and living in his own fantasy world: he essentially forced his way into the Vongola, insisting he was Tsuna's Right Hand Man without the okay from Tsuna or Reborn. (His blindness to Tsuna's refusal to be a mafia boss or accept Gokudera as a friend in the early chapters belies a fear of rejection, and he uses his dreams and fantasies as a defense against getting hurt.) He also has a tendency towards the... eccentric. He has a fascination with aliens and possibly the occult, therefore most likely wouldn't judge anyone for weird interests (although he might give them a strange look). In fact, he'd probably identify with them more than his own friends, who are more sports inclined than anything, which Gokudera is definitely not.

He's also extremely, blindly loyal, bordering on obsessive--but only for Tsuna and the Vongola. He'd stand by Tsuna until the end of time, and defend not only Tsuna but everyone Tsuna cares about. The Vongola are his family, not only his Famiglia, and he will protect them with every fiber of his being (even if Yamamoto is an idiot and Mukuro is creepy and Hibari is a menace to society). He's a hard worker, refusing to let personal weakness stand in the way of a goal, especially if that goal will in any way help Tsuna. He's brave, or maybe just reckless, refusing to stand down even when it's clear he's lost. He's ridiculously stubborn, and once he makes an opinion it's difficult to get him to change it. That said, he's not idealistic, nor does he really want to make the world a better place. He doesn't seem to care about doing what's morally right, or taking a stand on world issues: the most important thing to him is the Vongola, and the rest of the world takes a back seat.

History: Gokudera on Wikipedia
Timeline: Post future arc
Abilities: First off, Gokudera is smart. He knows a lot about math and science in particular, he speaks at least two languages (Italian, Japanese), he plays piano, and he pretty much aces his way through Japanese middle school without any problem. He's also a big nerd about modification and likes tinkering with electronics and adding totally cool (read: lame) skulls to everything he owns. What he lacks in common sense he makes up for in the ability to live through extreme situations (he lived on the streets from ages 8 to 13) and he has the tenacity to learn whatever he puts his mind to.

Secondly, he has his weapons.

Gokudera is a mid-range fighter, and best known for his explosives. He uses dynamite of varying kinds as his primary weapon throughout most of the series, which is part of the reason he's always seen smoking (he uses it to light his bombs mid fight). His dynamite include regular sticks that he can throw, mini sticks he can throw, and rocket bombs which track the target (he modified them himself).

Then came the future arc and he leveled up! Using his Vongola ring, he could open a box weapon that granted him a sort of gauntlet-gun hybrid weapon that fired off explosive bullets made from the Storm flame. In about the middle of the future arc, though, is when he gained his real weapon: the Sistema C.A.I. Using the Sistema's puzzle system, Gokudera can use four other flame types (Rain, Sun, Lightning, Cloud) in addition to his own Storm flame to open up box weapons of other kinds and power up his own weapon. He also has Uri, a spotted leopard kitten, who, when exposed to the Sun flame, grows into a larger than normal leopard with fighting abilities. Despite his various extra weapons, he's still a mid-range explosives fighter at heart.

Inventory: Obviously his horrible hot topic clothes, a couple packs of cigarettes, his Vongola ring, his box weapon (Uri) ring, his wallet, his reading glasses.

Sample writing:

Gokudera hid behind the brush line, peering out at the waters of the lock. He gripped tightly to his communicator, which he had been using to keep track of the mysterious things in this weird place. His crown tipped forward, pushing hair in front of an eye, and he quickly readjusted it, not wanting to miss anything that might appear. It was a little cold, but nothing he couldn't handle, and he huddled more for warmth.

It wasn't quite dark out, but almost, and Gokudera was on the hunt. When he'd first arrived he'd been careful to keep the weird tree crown safe--he knew enough about the occult to not do anything stupid. Still, despite numerous warnings from the other people in Demeleier, Gokudera wasn't about to sit around and do nothing. What if the Tenth showed up? He had to know everything about this place, and the only way to do that was to explore. He was careful not to wander off to far, and more often than not a certain baseball idiot tagged along (despite Gokudera's protests), so he wasn't completely unsafe. Still, he wasn't being completely stupid. And hiding behind the bushes was totally safe!

The loch didn't seem to be up to much, but Gokudera wasn't fooled. He knew somewhere in those depths, a loch ness monster had to be hiding. This place had everything, so of course there would be a Nessie. If he could just see it... just get a description... Of course, a video would be nice, but he wasn't sure he'd be able to get that back home with him. These communicators might only work in Demeleier after all. So while a video would be great, just seeing it would be enough. Then he could go to Scotland, and hunt down Nessie, and totally prove everyone--

"Hey Gokudera, what're you doing?"

Gokudera screeched, flailing forward into the bushes. The baseball idiot laughed, of course, as he always did. Scowling, Gokudera pulled himself out of the bush (after a bit of a struggle with a few thorns), covered in leaves. Yamamoto crouched down next to him, picking up Gokudera's dropped communicator.

"I was trying," Gokudera said, picking the leaves off his clothes, "to observe, obviously. Fuck off if you're going to try and drag me off to play sports or something."

"No, no, I was just bored! Can I observe with you?" Yamamoto looked entirely too earnest for Gokudera's liking, so he ignored him. Of course, Yamamoto just got comfortable, because he didn't have any sense of self preservation. Choosing to be the bigger man, Gokudera continued to ignore him, and they observed (absolutely nothing) until the sun finally set, and Yamamoto dragged Gokudera back to the Inn to get food.
